Instead of paying a huge amount of money to enjoy artificial ice wonders, Edmonton Glacial Lake is a total upgrade. The city of Edmonton is built upon surface deposits of variable thickness by Upper Cretaceous strata.  This glacial lake occupies part of the North Saskatchewan River valley near Edmonton at one stage extended into the Athabasca River valley.

10 Signs in Your Life That You Need to Travel

  1. Always feeling too tired every day or every night. You get enough rest or sleep but waking up in the morning is not as easy as before–it is never easy but when you suddenly realize you have lost your younger self’s enthusiasm and idealism, and when you just laze around all day, eating, sleeping, wriggling around your bed. Instead of hording calories, you definitely need to spend some time alone or take your friends with you and reboot your whole system.
  2. When there is too much toxicity in your environment, may it be because of your work or your personal life. It is never advisable to keep any negativity around you, you might not notice it affecting yourself at first but toxicity can slowly seep into your system and you would not know it until it has fully consumed you. Take a break once in a while, breathe and let out some steam. We can never avoid negative things to happen but you can balance it if you get out of the kitchen and have some good quality me time.
  3. If you feel lost especially when you feel lost and confused. It is normal to feel as if you are drifting and unattached. Travel, go somewhere when you feel lost. The irony is there alright, but it will reset your inner compass needle and help you find your true north. You can spend your time thinking, you can meet strangers that can surprisingly help you figure things out too. Conversations with strangers can actually bewilder you if you give it a chance.
  4. Distraught or heartbroken, a lot of things can cloud your mind and you can try confiding in others when you are in the verge of exploding or maybe imploding inside but travelling has its own magic of healing and emptying everything that hurts. Perhaps it is the nature? The fresh air? But going somewhere else will provide you a breath of fresh air, literally, to think clearly and finally defeat the overthinking.
  5. Torn. Some people can never be too cautious when making a decision, some can be too impulsive as well. Making rash decisions at the peak of their emotions can lead to catastrophic results. It can be an important business deal or again maybe something personal that only you can decide for yourself.
  6. When you just finished one path, unlike being lost or torn there are moments in people’s lives that can make them feel as if they have just crossed the finish line. Students who finally did it and graduated from college is one perfect example. Finally achieving your long term goal is another. Travelling after this kind of accomplishment is akin to asking yourself what’s next? Or as Flynn Rider called it, finding a new dream. Travelling as always will help you find whatever it is you want to do next, even discover something or another passion while travelling.
  7. If you are feeling trapped or stuck, yes you have an amazing job, yes you can pay the rent without problems but it is as if nothing is ever going to change. If you feel this way for so long you have lost count of the years then go and literally escape from everything. Tell your boss, you are going away. A nice vacation is a pretty nice start, this is one way to take the control of your life back to your own hands.
  8. Rebuilding bonds. A getaway surely never sounded bad to anyone. There are those who resort to a getaway when faced to a horrible relationship problems and just like the aforementioned, taking time off to breathe away from all the negativity is good to mend the rifts caused by probable external factors. Why not leave everything behind and just take what or who matters to you and focus there? Climb a mountain, have a sincere and profound conversation (mountains always do the trick of making people open up) at the peak and descend anew.
  9. Reinventing yourself, it can be a one way ticket and just choose to stay after leaving everything behind to start fresh. It could be about running away from something but not always. There are people who only wants another clean shit of canvas to paint with. Always a nice feeling isn’t it?
  10. When you have no idea what to do with your money. There are over 200 countries in the whole world, some people do not have enough resources and time to travel across the world so if you do not know what to do with your money and you still have the time to spare, go and see new places that can open your mind. Learning and growing up never ends and travelling to meet new people is the best way to be wiser.

Saving the waters, save Boracay

Boracay has been lauded as a cesspool by President Rodrigo Duterte and local executives plead for the salvation of the beautiful paradise of an island. The president has also threatened to declare a ‘state of calamity’ over the growing water pollution turned to sewage problem in Boracay.saveboracay1.jpg

The island is part of the rapid urbanization development that took place in the country in the early 2000s, 47% of the bodies of water in the country are in still good condition, 40% is fair quality, and 13% considered being bad quality. However, the island is a tremendous facet of tourism for the country, making a revenue of over 2 million pesos in the year 2017 alone. Shutting down the place for months will sure cause a ripple effect towards the industry.

Water pollution is largely caused by hazardous wastes and toxic materials such as those from oil refineries, oil tankers, construction wastes, improper disposal of chemical wastes, sewage leaks, and agricultural runoffs as a few examples.

In the context of the Boracay crisis however, water pollution in the island is mainly caused by human activities and natural resources combined. This type of water pollution is called a non-point source pollution that can occur from large residential areas with poor lawn quality from sewage leaks and other type of contaminant. Hotels and bars alike are swarming the island and these properties can be of a paramount contributor to the degrading waters of the island. Effects of this gradual deterioration are toxic rain, sickness and diseases from the water, and eventually the degradation of land and water.

What the government can do

Since the government led by Gina Lopez has rallied great amount of effort to save and preserve the nature, first the Filipinos need to be made aware of the health and economic repercussions of water pollution. Awareness if the first key. Stakeholders across all sectors also need to understandingly cooperate in order to prioritize the right actions to save the quality of water. Wastewater treatment should be paid attention to, also the implementation of the laws (Clean Water Act of 2004) regarding the contribution to wastewater.

How everybody can help

In simple ways, everybody can make, together it would create an impact.

  1. Keep your car well maintained and have it regularly serviced to avoid and oil leakage.
  2. Reduce, recycle, reuse any materials you have purchased. Plastics the most harmful waste can always be reused in whichever way that you see fit.
  3. Disposal of non-recyclable waste should be given proper and utmost attention. Do not throw in carelessly anywhere that could lead it to any body of water.
  4. Properly dispose of toxic chemicals instead of dropping them down the drain. The internet can always be of an assistance as to how to dispose any toxic chemicals in your house.
  5. Have your septic tanks regularly taken care of as well, this can later on cause a sewage problem.
  6. Lastly, conserve water. Other countries are not so lucky as the Philippines to be abundant in fresh and seawater.

Mount Isarog

It is not Mayon Volcano that is in the province of Camarines Sur, it is actually Mount Isarog.

Only a few people outside the province know the mountain, the highlight always goes to the perfect coned shape volcano in the opposite side of the region. The very reason why Isarog is a very well preserved natural habitat, nobody gives the mountain that much of attention. Hikers perhaps are magnetized by the giant, more than 2,000m above sea level, it is the highest peak in the whole Bicol Region. It is so vast that it stretches from Naga City to the town of Goa, Camarines Sur which is more than 20km away from the capital city.

The mountain has a wide opening crater but its last eruption was dated back in 1915-1916. It is called Vulcan de Agua by locals. Some stories say it is because it is not molten rock which is inside the mountain but water, a lot feared the story that once the mountain decides to wake up from its slumber and explodes that whole lot of Camarines Sur will be wiped out from the map. However, science likes to debate as always, claiming that it is rather impossible for one landform to contain water from within and cleared the myth behind the ‘Water Volcano’. Isarog is dubbed as Vulcan de Agua because of its lush rainforest and countless waterfalls of which only three are known: Malabsay & Nabuntalan falls, in Naga and Consocep falls in the town of Tigaon.

Isarog also harbors a myriad of species in its forests: the Isarog Shrew Mouse, the Isarpg Stripes Shrew Mouse, Isarog Shrew Rat, and Isolated Forest Frog. There are also 143 species of birds. While the mammals inhabiting the forest among many are the Philippine deer, monkeys, bats, wildcats, and wild pigs. The best treat of nature is the giant Rafflesia can also be found in Isarog.

Let us talk about views. People climb for the breathtaking views. Being the grandfather of all mountains in the region, stand atop the Isarog and you will get the perfect sight of the valley. Yes, this part of Bicol is a valley, mountains face across far from each other and the plain in the middle became the center of civilization. Mayon volcano can be seen from Camarines Sur to Albay, also Mount Iriga as well. From Naga city, the mountain stand in the east, it casts a dark but alluring shadow to the city that gets the touch of the sun a little too late in the morning. From the other side of the province however, say in the town of Tigaon and Goa, Camarines Sur, the mountain shines like a marble. The sunrays illuminate the rocks, the forest and even the Consocep falls (whose waters are dauntingly cold, you can stock up beers and sodas on its waters) is visible as a streak of white down the mountain because of the sun. Isarog wake up like a princess with the sun but when it rains it can sometimes hide in the rain fog.

Isarog Sky Garden

The easiest trail to conquer the sleeping giant is located at Naga City, it can take from 8 hours to 14 hours on a good day. There is also a trail in Goa, Camarines Sur that leads directly to the open mouth of Isarog. Trekkers take this long trail that can last up to four days because they get to hike on the very rim of the crater to the top. A few unknown trails can lead to the peak as well, adventurous local youngsters climb the mountain on their own desired path, making their own trail however for safety purposes only climb with the mountain guides appointed by the local government unit themselves. Camping in the forest can quite be dangerous only those who have the enough survival skills and kit are allowed to spend the night.

Consocep Falls

Tourists always think of island hopping immediately after the mention of Camarines Sur and they are referring to the Caramoan group of Islands which has been the site of several season of the reality competitive show Survivor. Camarines Sur is more than just Caramoan and the Camarines Sur Water Complex (CWC), a manmade surfing turf and sport water activities. Mount Isarog is one mountain filled with multiple adventure activities; hiking, camping, and swimming combined. All of which are hard to come by nowadays.
