2018: A Refresher of the Awesome Things You Can Do in Boracay

Only 7km long, and at points, only 500m wide, Boracay has become the most famous island in the Philippines. The island is a postcard-perfect location, defined by white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, palm trees, and luxury resorts.

For those looking for a relaxing holiday, settle into the islands beach beanbags, and enjoy ice cold tropical cocktails. For the more adventurous, there is a wide range of water sports activities, including jet skis, windsurfing, and diving.

Now that it is open to the public again, here is a refresher of the great things to do in Boracay,

1. Cliff Diving at Ariel’s Point

Ariel’s Point is a small rocky island 30 minutes from Boracay with 5 diving boards, ranging from 3 to 15 meters.

The challenge of cliff diving combined with the natural environment, the social setting, unlimited drinks, and a BBQ buffet make it one of Boracay’s most popular things to do.

It’s a day trip and the use of activity equipment such as snorkeling gear, stand up paddleboards and kayaks is included.

2. Explore Boracay’s Beaches and Islands by Boat

Parasailing is an exhilarating way to get amazing aerial views of Boracay and its surroundings. You’ll have about 15 minutes of airtime to enjoy.

3. Go on a Sailing Adventure with a Paraw

A paraw is a local sailboat that’s similar to a catamaran in that it has 2 outriggers. Depending on the time of day and the weather you’ll have a different experience…

A paraw can carry up to 6 people and you can choose between a private or a join in a group tour, both normally last an hour.

4. Tour the Island Like a Boss in a Helicopter

Experience the ultimate aerial view of Boracay with a helicopter. You’ll fly all around the island to get views of its different beaches and surrounding islands.

If you’ve never experienced flying in a helicopter before, this is your chance to do so at a surprisingly affordable rate.

The heli can carry 3 people (excluding the pilot), and flights last from 10 up to 20 minutes.

5. Go on a Mainland Adventure Tour

The mainland adventures tour is a day trip that takes place at and around Nabaoy River. A jungle garden next to the river serves as the base camp from which you can explore the surrounding nature, enjoy the BBQ lunch and do add-on activities.

There are many add-on activities to choose from, such as river tubing, waterfall exploration, mountain biking and more.

6. Explore the Underwater World with Scuba Diving

Boracay has over 15 dive sites that are all accessible via a short boat ride. Most of them are easy so it’s a perfect place for beginners to learn. If you’re a more experienced diver then there are some challenging dive sites as well, like Yapak.

7. Go Helmet Diving and Find Nemo

Helmet diving is the easiest way to enjoy the underwater world of Boracay. No swimming ability or diving knowledge is required. Just put the helmet on and you’re ready to go.

Once you’re down under you’ll be surprised at how tame the fish are, they’re not scared of you, and you can feed them too. Your guide will also take underwater pictures of you and your friends which you can take home as a fun reminder of the activity.

8. Fly with the Zipline

Zip down across Boracay’s landscape in the superman position and feel the high-speed thrill as you take in the view of the lush green landscape, and Lapuz Lapuz beach to your right.

The zip line ride takes about 3 minutes. After that, you’ll travel back up to your original position in a cable car. That ride takes 15 to 20 minutes, so on the way back, you’ll have time to enjoy the view in a more relaxing setting.

9. Ride the Fly Fish

The Fly Fish is a big inflatable raft that goes airborne when a speedboat pulls it along at high speed. At medium speed, it’ll start to make unpredictable movements as the front of the raft lifts up. It’s lots of fun trying to hold on as it twists and turns and occasionally goes airborne.

10. Become a Mermaid & Get a Photoshoot

Learn to swim like a mermaid in Boracay’s clear blue waters and meet other mermaids. You can also capture your transformation with a photo shoot.

11. Get a Massage

After a fun-filled day of activities, what better way is there to relax than with a massage. Rest and let your body recharge for the evening. You can get a massage either along the beach or inside a spa. On the beach is usually cheaper, most commonly? P350 (~USD $7).

Puerto Galera: The Frugal Man’s Boracay

tumblr_mmmolmnMiy1qbyo2do5_1280

White sand beach? Crystal clear waters? Great nightlife?

There are at least a dozen different things one can do in Puerto Galera, or Gale, as the locals call their beautiful paradise of a home. From pitching tents, lighting bonfires, playing beach volleyball & Frisbees, watching the sunset, gazing at the stars, climbing cliffs, driving bikes around the area, the list could go on when discovering Oriental Mindoro’s Gale.

However, the water is still the main attraction of Gale, Crystal clear water shimmering under the sun. Puerto Galera’s landscape is very ideal for swimming, sailing, surfing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. In fact, there is no need to ride a boat to a diving site. Within a kilometer from the coast, schools of Moorish idols are already thriving in the shallow reefs of Gale.

  1. Where is Puerto Galera situated?

Gale is located on the northern shore of the island of Mindoro, 130km south of Manila, and 14 nautical miles away from Batangas Pier. You can reach Gale by land transport to Batangas pier and then by sea ferry to the paradise.

  1. How long is the travel time?

From Metro Manila to Batangas pier usually takes two to three hours depending on the traffic flow. The fastest route is by Skyway, South Luzon Expressway, then Calabarzon highway all the way to Batangas pier. Lastly, the ferry boat ride takes one hour to one and a half.

  1. How much does public transportation cost?

Gale is close in proximity to Manila, making it the cheap alternative of Boracay. A four-hour bus ride and ferry travel worth less than 500php (one-way), one way to get to White Beach is by taking a bus with a signage of “Batangas Pier via Calabarzon” near the LRT Gil Puyat station in Pasay City. The fare for an aircon bus is less than 200php and it will take you to Batangas Pier, where you should alight and would find Puerto Galera bound ferries. Pick a ferry that could take you directly to White Beach with a 250pho fare.

  1. What time does the ferry leave for Puerto Galera?

The first ferry trip to Puerto Galera departs at around 7:30 AM. Thereafter, a ferry leaves every hour until 5:00 PM which is normally the last trip to Puerto Galera.

  1. Where should I stay, Sabang or White Beach?

Sabang and White Beach are the flagships of Puerto Galera to par with nearby island’s beaches. Although there is this understatement that tourists prefer Sabang beach while locals go to White Beach. Perhaps the reason behind is that Sabang is swarmed by a number of high-class resorts, offering best dive education in the country, and dive sites are literally a stone’s throw away. Nightlife in Sabang is also different from White’s, somehow it is akin to the old Ermita, the former red light district of Metro Manila.

One comparison is that Sabang Beach is for the young and adventurous, meanwhile, White Beach is for families, for the carefree individuals who enjoy casual activities under the sun.

White Beach (Brgy San Isidro) is the most popular of Puerto Galera’s 32 beaches, especially among Filipino tourists. Come summer, from March to May. The beaches are filled with people, relaxing, walking to and fro, sunbathing, playing volleyball, riding jet skis and banana boats. At dawn, people sit at the beach to witness one of the best sunsets in the country. At night, more people come out to enjoy meals at beachfront restaurants. There are several open-air bars with drag queen dancers and serving Puerto Galera’s trademark concoction, “Mindoro Sling”. There are also many tattoo shops and souvenir shops along White Beach.

  1. How do I find places to stay at in Puerto Galera?

Perhaps one of the reservations of many travel bugs is about accommodations, but rest assured eGetinnz has everyone’s back, providing flexible options for travelers. eGetexperience Puerto Galera today and let us help you leap around the world.

Boracay for Vacation and Forever

A vacation package to the Philippines isn’t enough if it’s going to be a trip to Boracay. You’re going to need to go for longer durations of vacation rentals if you want the best beach party scene and, at the same time, relaxingly iconic island vibe the Philippines has to offer.

Boracay, in recent years, has garnered mixed receptions from both the local and foreign tourist. The biggest beef that it has is how commercialism has consumed what was once a virginal strip of untainted paradise. Even with the reputation, Boracay is still constantly flocked by people year in and year out which, we’ll guess, is what majorly makes up its new found appeal: it’s the island equivalent of Facebook or Twitter.

Going for Vacation

Boracay is an island just off the coast of Kalibo, within the province of Aklan. To get there, you will need to fly from Manila (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) to Kalibo airport and then take a boat ride to the island.

The Philippines is such a foreigner friendly country and a short term rental is a great option to go for when availing for accommodations in Boracay. Not only are Filipinos very friendly towards none nationals, the accommodations are budget friendly as well especially for short- and long-term transience.

socializing-at-white-beach-bar

Some hotels could go for as much as 6,000 Philippines Pesos (PhP) a day but a short term rental place might only cost around 14,000PhP a month, and that’s for the nicer places nearer the shore. They go lower the further from the shore a place is.

But why go for short term rentals? Because it’s hard to completely appreciate Boracay for very short stays. A trip of 3 days and 2 nights would be enough to get your party on (because the party scene is very “lit” in Boracay, if we may say so ourselves) and do some water activities like kite surfing or island hopping but you will need more time to be able to also enjoy the local culture, most of the other islands and secret beaches, and good Filipino company.

Going for Longer

Boracay might be a great place to retire. It isn’t jam-packed throughout the year so you still get to enjoy the laidback seaside experience that the island was once known for. Not to mention, you can choose which of its 12 beautiful beaches to crash depending on your mood. If you have a budget of less than 2,000 USD per month, you can live quite a comfortable & luxurious life in Boracay (generally, most vacation rentals in the Philippines might cost somewhere around 200 USD per month, more if closer to major cities like Manila or Cebu).

Going Forever

If you aren’t going to the Philippines for vacation packages and are looking for something along the lines of “permanent stay”, the Philippine government offers special considerations for retirees through the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa or SRRV. You can read more about it here. They also, since 2015, have opened their government subsidized health care system to foreigners. The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) accepts and provides health care benefits to expatriates living in the Philippines for long periods or permanently—the coverage could take of as much as 80% which is especially helpful if you get hospitalized. Not to mention, the Veterans Memorial Hospital (albeit only has their main facility in Manila) also provides veterans with medical services.

Whether for vacation rentals or permanent stay in the Philippines, Boracay should be one consideration on your mind. It has familiar Western comforts but even behind the massive parties and consumerism, it also retains its friendly Filipino culture of hospitality and camaraderie.
